User Experience and Artificial Intelligence working together.

User Experience and Artificial Intelligence Working Together

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) isn’t something confined to sci-fi movies or data labs any longer. AI has become an instrumental part of UX technology – a part that is only growing. Just think about all the data being collected and the algorithms that drive so many of your online interactions. What do you do with all that data? How do you shape it? These are the questions on the mind of many designers these days. So, how do UX and AI work together?

The Fear Factor

One of the biggest problems facing AI is people’s perception of it. Remember in the Terminator movies that AI turned on mankind and tried to destroy them. Don’t worry – that’s not really AI at all! AI is already being used on your phone, your watch, your televisioPersonalization – Context is incredibly important for a personalized experience. A user interface should seek to clarify and provide feedback so that it instills confidence in the user. Metadata from interactions with the user should provide the AI with the information it needs to adapt itself and become more useful over time.

n, and maybe even your refrigerator. So, there’s nothing to fear – those appliances haven’t yet joined together to take over the world.

But there are a few ideas designers need to think about when it comes to incorporating AI with UX, such as:

  • How to address user frustration when voice-enabled products don’t understand what they’re saying (we’re talking to you, Siri)

  • Anticipate and then design for experiences that have yet to become seamless

  • Dealing with pressure to execute cutting edge, flawless AI experiences for eveyone

The biggest thing to confront is how to design interfaces that set the right expectations. Asking machines to do something they’re simply not capable of is frustrating and can be damaging to the goals you’re trying to accomplish.

What Your AI and UX Product Has to Have

There’s a lot of opportunity for innovation in UX and AI, but don’t get bogged down in all the possibilities at once. You must focus on a few key requirements that every AI product must have in order to be successful. These include:

  • Conversation – Users shouldn’t feel misunderstood. A bot with a good-natured and friendly tone helps put the user at ease and provides a more pleasant experience for the user as well. Ideally, the user should feel as if they’re talking to a good friend who knows them and should also gain something from each interaction.

  • Personalization – Context is incredibly important for a personalized experience. A user interface should seek to clarify and provide feedback so that it instills confidence in the user. Metadata from interactions with the user should provide the AI with the information it needs to adapt itself and become more useful over time.

  • Visualizations – Interesting and complex data are better understood when they’re shown rather than told. Enable users to gain insights and see the big picture in order to improve their experience. This is part of what makes AI so unique – it has the ability to interact with the user through speech and visualizations. Don’t overlook the value of it!

What’s Next?

AI is a technology that is growing, but still has far to go. As it stands now, only bits and pieces of products can utilize AI. But one day, an entire product may be smart enough to tailor experiences for each user and make an interaction feel completely authentic and exclusive.
